About La Estrecha
La Estrecha is a red wine produced in the D.O. Manchuela by Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce. The wine's name derives from the "narrowness" of the vineyard, planted with a density of 1,700 plants per hectare, whereas the usual density does not exceed 1,100.
La Estrecha is a single-varietal wine made from the Bobal grape variety, sourced from old vineyards over 75 years old, planted on calcareous soils at an altitude of 870 metres above sea level.
Technically, it cannot be considered a pure single-varietal, as among the Bobal vines in this vineyard, there are also a few of the red varieties Moravia and Autumn Royal and the white Marisancho, which contribute freshness and elegance.
The climate is continental, with scant rainfall and significant temperature variations between day and night, which aid in the proper ripening of the grapes. This harsh climate results in low vineyard yields, but produces grapes with great concentration.
Fermentation occurs in wooden vats with indigenous yeasts from the vineyard itself.
La Estrecha ages for 11 months in 600-litre French oak barrels.
