About Purgatori

Familia Torres Purgatori is a red wine crafted by Familia Torres in the town of Les Borges Blanques (Lleida), within the esteemed D.O. Costers del Segre.

Familia Torres is a venerable family enterprise established in 1870 by Jaime and Miguel Torres Vendrell, with successive generations devoted to the production of wine and brandy in Penedès. Presently, Familia Torres produces wines in numerous wine-growing regions across the globe. In Spain, it owns four wineries across four different denominations of origin: Penedès, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Priorat.

In 1999, Familia Torres acquired the estate Els Desterrats, a property with an extreme climate originally intended to shelter monks from the Abbey of Montserrat for penance. They soon realized that the harsh conditions of the area were ideal for crafting wines of the highest quality.

Familia Torres Purgatori is a wine composed of Cariñena, Garnacha, and Syrah varietals, sourced from the finest vineyards of the Finca Els Desterrats, an estate encompassing over 175 hectares dedicated to vine cultivation.

Following harvest, the wine undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks with temperature control, between 26-28°C, for one week. Upon completion of fermentation, it is aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. Before being released to the market, it is further refined for a minimum of 20 months in the bottle.

Familia Torres Purgatori is a mature, intense, and profound wine. The bouquet is characterized by ripe red fruit aromas with smoky and lactic notes derived from its aging process. On the palate, it is vibrant and reveals an abundant concentration of fruit.

Legend has it that large barrels would mysteriously vanish. Some claimed that angels, having descended in secret to sample the exquisite wines, would take a portion to heaven each year.

Familia Torres Purgatori 2021 is a red wine that greets us with an aromatic profile where Mediterranean herbs stand out alongside a selection of red fruits such as cherries and wild berries. On the palate, it reveals a subtle maturity that envelops the taste, accompanied by a spicy touch reminiscent of pepper and cloves. Its body is slightly robust, displaying a concentration of flavours that intertwine harmoniously, resulting in a wine that is both balanced and characterful.
2019 Purgatori 2019 is a red wine boasting a deep cherry hue, which on the nose presents a bouquet reminiscent of blueberry jam, complemented by hints of spices and nuances of rosemary honey and beeswax. On the palate, it is expressive and velvety, brimming with an abundance of ripe fruit, and a present yet balanced and refreshing acidity. An intense and profound red wine that promises a lengthy potential for ageing.
